Most AI tools get judged on how loud their launch was. That tells you a lot about the marketing budget and very little about the product. So here’s a different scorecard: how much noise a tool makes, set against how much work it does once the noise dies down.

On that scale, the most interesting tools are the quiet ones.

The ones nobody talks about

Many of the tools that score low on hype and high on usefulness are alternatives to something you’re probably already paying for.

For voice, Fish Audio is a serious alternative to ElevenLabs and deserves far more attention. Kokoro TTS is a small text-to-speech model that sounds much better than its fame would suggest. If you dictate a lot, Handy does most of what Wispr Flow does, without the fanfare.

For meetings and notes, Meetily is Granola without the hype. Open Notebook is the open alternative to Google’s NotebookLM: you give it your own documents and ask questions about them.

Krea quietly became useful for image generation while everyone was looking elsewhere. MiroThinker is one of the most underrated research agents around, meaning a tool that searches, reads and summarises on its own instead of answering from memory. And if you want to build automations, CrewAI lets you set up several AI agents, each doing one task and passing the work along. It’s an assembly line, but for prompts.

The ones everybody talks about

The big names are a different story, because there hype and reality sit much closer together.

ChatGPT has had an enormous amount of attention since the launch of GPT-6 Astra, and this time it mostly lives up to it, especially for images and automations. Claude is still very good, but tech bros have overhyped it, which says more about the tech bros than about Claude. Grok is better than people give it credit for. Gemini is the odd one out: modest hype, modest reality, and a fair question whether many people still open it by choice.

What to do with this

If you pay for a well-known AI tool, spend half an hour checking whether a quiet alternative does 90% of the job. Often it does, and sometimes it’s free. The loudest launch is rarely the best fit for your own work. It’s just the one you heard about first.
