You mention needing new running shoes while talking to a friend. Hours later, your Instagram feed is flooded with sneaker ads. You say out loud that you’re thinking about adopting a dog — something you’ve never searched for — and the next morning, dog food ads appear everywhere.

Coincidence? A glitch in the Matrix? Or something far more calculated?

For years, people have suspected their phones are secretly recording conversations. The truth is both more straightforward and more unsettling: tech companies don’t need to record everything you say. They only need to analyse the right moments, detect the right patterns, and combine that with the sprawling data ecosystem already surrounding you.

Here’s what’s really happening, why it works, and how you can protect yourself.

The System doesn’t record, it detects

Modern smartphones typically don’t record or archive your conversations. That would create enormous legal exposure and massive storage costs. Instead, the real system operates on a more subtle level.

Voice assistants must always listen. Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant constantly monitor for wake words like “Hey Siri” or “OK Google.” This requires continuous passive audio monitoring. Once microphone access is granted, that same pipeline can analyse patterns without storing full conversations.

Apps request far more access than they need. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, shopping apps, and even seemingly innocent utilities routinely ask for microphone permission. When these apps are open, the microphone can be active — and there’s little oversight on what happens during that time.

Silent signals track your physical world. Retail stores and TV commercials sometimes emit ultrasonic beacons — sounds pitched above human hearing. Your phone can detect them. These signals help advertisers track your physical location, TV viewing habits, and shopping behaviour without your awareness.

The surprising part? They don’t need audio files. They extract keywords, behaviours, and patterns — then feed them into targeting algorithms.

Keyword detection: The real engine behind “Creepy” Ads

Researchers have discovered that many apps use keyword detection rather than full audio logging. Certain spoken words — even mentioned just once — can trigger specific ad categories.

Say “pregnant” aloud, and pregnancy product ads may follow. Mention “lawyer,” and legal service ads appear. Talk about feeling “hungry,” and food delivery apps surface in your feed.

No recordings stored. No conversations archived, just keywords flagged and funnelled into advertising systems.

This allows tech companies to make technically accurate statements like “We don’t listen to your conversations” while omitting the more revealing truth: they don’t need to listen to everything when they can detect the right things.

Major tech companies have filed and received patents for technologies that analyse ambient audio, detect keywords, and trigger actions based on spoken phrases.

Don’t type it. Don’t search for it. Just say it.

Then wait 48 hours and check your ads.

The reported results are striking. Roughly 60 to 70 per cent of participants receive ads for the exact product they mentioned. Another 20 per cent see related product ads. Only about 10 per cent report no change.

Why doesn’t it work for everyone? Because not all apps monitor audio equally, and targeting systems rely on multiple data sources — location history, web behaviour, app usage, purchase patterns, household devices, and more. But for those who experience it, the effect feels undeniable.

What’s coming next

Several emerging technologies will make all of this significantly more powerful.

Real-time emotion detection is already in development. AI systems can analyse voice tone to determine whether you’re stressed, sad, angry, or excited — then serve ads tailored to your emotional state.

Health and insurance profiling represents another frontier. Conversation analysis may soon identify signs of depression, substance issues, or risky behaviours. Insurance companies are exploring these capabilities, which could eventually affect premiums and coverage.

Legal use of voice data is also on the horizon. Voice recordings could be subpoenaed in lawsuits or accessed by employers if captured on work devices.

Predictive advertising may eventually detect subtle changes in your voice — early signs of illness, for example — before you’re even aware something is wrong. Medication ads could arrive before symptoms appear.

Your psychological profile, built from thousands of small signals, could follow you indefinitely.

Why companies will never admit it

If tech companies openly acknowledged audio-triggered targeting, they would face catastrophic consequences: GDPR violations across Europe, wiretapping lawsuits in the United States, potential criminal charges, stock price collapses, and a global erosion of trust.

So they use carefully calibrated language. “We don’t listen to your conversations.” “It’s just the algorithm.” “Your activity history is enough to predict this.”

All technically correct. All strategically incomplete.

What you can do right now

If you want to limit microphone-based targeting, start with permissions.

On iPhone: Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. Disable access for Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, shopping apps, browsers, and any app that doesn’t absolutely require it.

On Android: Navigate to Settings → Privacy → Permission Manager → Microphone. Deny access to the same app categories.

For all devices: Turn off “Hey Siri” and “OK Google.” Avoid using voice assistants when possible. Use browser versions of apps instead of installing them. Consider physical microphone blockers for laptops.

None of these solutions is perfect. Tech companies have many other ways to track and profile you. But limiting microphone access dramatically reduces a significant surveillance vector.
